Where in the world are we?

Phillip Island, Victoria - Extended

Most visitors to the picturesque Phillip Island are day-trippers who come especially to see the penguins as they surf ashore at dusk and waddle up to their burrows with full tummies to feed their young. We made our visit a four day trip to have a decent break, enjoy the peacefull surrounds and experience some of the gastronomical highlights of the island.

The coastline around some parts of the island is quite rugged.

Our burrow of choice was Ripples n Tonic, a unique farm stay accomodation option with a number of fully equipped cottages, some with up to three bedrooms. You can join the guided animal feeding tour each morning or just enjoy the serenity at your own pace.

The property is near Ventnor beach which is on the sheltered side of the island, great for beach strolls and dog friendly.

There is a big list of attractions and things you can do on Phillip Island:

  • The Penguin Parade
  •  Visit Pannys Chocolate Factory
  • Grand Prix Circuit Visitor Centre and Go Karts
  • Visit Cape Woolamai
  • Visit the Nobbies Centre
  • Take a wildlife coastal cruise
  • Visit Churchill Island
  • Visit the Maru Koala and Animal Park
  • Go for a surf
  • Go for a beach walk

We had a very enjoyable lunch and a glass of white wine one day at Salt Water, a delightful cafe and winery perched on an old jetty that juts into the straight between Phillip Island and San Remo. And while we are on the subject of San Remo, a little town on the mainland just before you cross the bridge to Phillip Island, make sure you visit the fishermans co-op and grab the best feed of fish and chips you have had for a long time.

You’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants in Cowes, the main town centre on Phillip Island. There is a variety of shops in the main street that leads down to the beach. The Phillip Island Winery is not far away from Cowes and offers food, wine and entertainment. It’s known for its delightful cheese platter, pate, and arancini, which perfectly complement their wine selection

We had some lovely drives around the island and were even lucky enough to see some whales close to shore. Down towards Nobbies the Cape Barren Geese are prolific and we sighted some kangaroos.

As Victoria’s capital Melbourne grows to become Australia’s largest city, it is comforting to note that the peace and tranquility of Phillip Island is only a couple of hours away.
